That feeling when you just channeled a new business idea fresh from the oven (can you smell it!?) and are already planning how to market it on IG? Yeah. I know. It still happens to me.
As if business equals Instagram
That if I want to sell my work, IG is the best & only way to do that. Even though you and I both know it’s not.
Because:
- Followers don’t equal clients
- About 1% of my followers actually liked my posts (even when I felt llike I just wrote the next Great American Novel)
- About 0,5% of them left a comment.
It’s not about the likes. No.
But, if your living depends on IG… it does become about the likes (or actually, the sales that you make through the people who are liking your posts).
Your reel might get 10k views, but does it really bring in clients? Money? Basic needs?
Probably not.
The energy & time you invest in IG… you’ll never get back
(Those 8 hours you spent on creating the best reel in IG history? Gone!)
While that random blog post you wrote 3 years ago (or will write today)? That one still pops up in Google every now and then, for search terms ONLY your soulmate clients would ever use.
AKA the people who are giggling with excitement to sign up for your newsletter or to download your freebie.
Slow marketing channels (blog, podcast, etc.) have that potential, while IG… doesn’t.
Your 1 year old reel vanishes into the IG abyss never to be seen again. Ever.
So, how to write that blog post? Lemme help ya!
- Go through your notes, whether it’s notes from clients sessions or your plain old morning pages – Julia Camerion style. Scan them, don’t read. Take the first best sentence that stands out to you. Don’t overthink it. Don’t switch. Write it at the top your page. Pen & paper or daunting blank Word doc.
- Immediately write the next sentence that comes through. This can also be a random thought. If you need to, speak the sentence out loud and listen for what you expect would come next.
- This will be far from perfect and it HAS TO BE. You can’t write perfectly, it’s impossible. Perfection comes much, much later in the process. Writing is not about perfection. It’s about writing. Whether it’s grand Aristotle quality or weird brain dump material. Don’t try to write prose.
- Repeat. Don’t stop writing. Listen, watch or feel (this is different for everyone) for the next sentence and write it. Even if it doesn’t make sense (it probably won’t).
- Keep going for at least 5 minutes, then look at what you wrote. Rewrite it in a way your soulmate client will feel like you’re talking to her.
Now you might be like: ‘Charelle, that’s all very well, but who is my soulmate client?’
I get it. You got into your head. Exactly where your soulmate client is not.
For now, remember this: when you write in the way you talk (not the way you were taught in uni), your soulmate client will know, feel and get you.
That’s all there is to it, really.
